Developing the use of marker assisted selection in crop improvement research :
Legume Mapping Course focusing on Dolichos (Lablab purpureus)
9 to 23 November 2005 in Bangalore

A two week course was held in November 2005 by a
collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology, University of
Agricultural Sciences at Bangalore (UAS B), the John Innes Centre,
Norwich, UK and the Kirkhouse Trust. The National Centre for Biological
Sciences (NCBS) hosted key elements of the course.
The course examined the principles, construction and uses of
genetic maps in the context of crop improvement. The benefits of
comparative genomics also was explored. There was laboratory
training in the use of SSR markers.
The 2005 mapping course followed on from two previous courses, held in 2003 and 2004, which centred on analysis of the diversity in Dolichos collections held at UAS B and elsewhere and provided
training in AFLP techniques. The course was held in
the Department of Biotechnology and the NCBS Computer suite,
both on the GKVK Campus. Course participants were primarily UAS B
faculty members who attended the two previous coures - both plant
breeders and molecular scientists.
Teaching on the course was provided by scientists from India, UK, USA and Australia.
Funding for the course was provided by the Kirkhouse Trust
as part of a wider collaboration with the University of Agricultural
Sciences, Bangalore. The organisers wish to express their grateful
thanks to NCBS for generously making their computer suite and other
facilities available to the Course.
