Scholarships:

The Kirkhouse Trust has funded a limited number of overseas graduates to study in the UK. However, in December 2004, the Trust reviewed its policy on the funding of postgraduate study in European universities. The Trustees decided that it is more cost effective to support higher degree students in universities located within the developing world with, possibly, 6-12 months training in a European or US laboratory.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the Trust mainly supports applicants for post-graduate study as part of larger collaborative projects with Institutions. It rarely supports individual applicants.

Please check the following points before applying to the Trust:

  • The Trust cannot assist an applicant in finding a PhD studentship. Indeed, the Trust will only accept an application if there is evidence that a PhD supervisor is willing to accept him/her as their student.
  • The Trust only supports PhDs on crop improvement and where the research proposed is relevant to the research interests of the country of origin of the student. The Trust will require confirmation that the programme of study is relevant to the needs of the applicant's country of origin.
  • The applicant must be able to demonstrate that s/he will return to their country of origin on completion of their PhD. This means that there needs to be an arrangement in place with an Institute in the country of origin - it could be that the applicant will be either on secondment/study leave from their place of employment, or has a clear offer of an appointment on completion of their studies.

Value of Awards:

Support will normally be for a maximum of three years. The Trust will pay the Institution's fees and also will pay reasonable relocation expenses at the beginning and end of the study period. A maintentance allowance including accommodation expenses will be paid to the value recommended by the institution.

Student supervision

The Kirkhouse Trust has its own policy concerning monitoring and reviewing the progress of research students which it funds. This policy relates to students supported via:

  • Kirkhouse Trust Scholarships covering all or most of: fees, maintenance and research costs, and
  • Kirkhouse Trust research project grants where all, or only some, of a student's fee, maintenance and research costs are provided within the grant to their institution.

If any student is supported from the funding grants provided for this research project, it is a contractual requirement that Kirkhous Trust's policy on monitoring and evaluating their progress is complied with during the term of the grant.

The policy requires regular reporting to Kirkhouse Trust on a student's progress by the supervisor and the student. Policy documents and report form templates can be downloaded from the Kirkhouse Trust website below.

To avoid duplication of effort, standard forms and reports required by the student's own University can usually be substituted for Kirkhouse Trust's own forms and reports. However, if Kirkhouse Trust is not satisfied by these versions, it reserves the right to require its own forms be submitted and that students customises their reports to comply with the Trust's policy.
